Weiss Park at 9215 mandale

Ideas for Change

NCI staff began meeting with residents around this park in 2006 to discuss how the park might be improved to meet community needs.  Then, in 2007, after learning of the Kellogg Access to Recreation program through the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, we began an intensive planning process consistent with the vision and purpose of that initiative.

Current Conditions

This is a lovely Park across from historic Woodmere Cemetery, yet its furnishings are long overdue for updating.  Many of the park features are obsolete and dangerous as well as being completely inaccessible to people with mobility impairments.

NCI’s Vision

Our broad intention is to serve the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community by creating neighborhoods that offer such a high quality of life that our prospering residents of all ethnicities will stay and invest further in the community.  NCI is working with the Detroit Department of Recreation and architect Cynthia Silveri to create an exciting new community park and playspace that not only meets current requirements for physical accessibility but far exceeds them so as to fully engage handicapped persons in the recreational experience.
