Cahalan
Cahalan Street is the most challenging section of our neighborhood because of its prior history of vandalism and arson fostered by a very few criminal families. Extensive land has been cleared in this area, and it is now the focal point for major redevelopment with new housing in the northern part of our Springdale neighborhood.
The Cahalan Street residents are enthusiastic about prospects for the improvements of this neighborhood. We had a total attendance of 87 over the two meetings we had on site with residents in 2006. With their support, we were able to get the City to tear down the remaining four derelict structures.
This mini-Park will be the centerpiece of the new development. It would have features for small children and teens that could not be included in limited space of our first Park. Our plan is to purchase the required two lots and resolve design, zoning and funding issues in 2007.
After developing this mini-Park in 2008, we will turn it over to the
Bridging Communities nonprofit corporation for long-term maintenance and
operation in conjunction with community residents. Bridging Communities
will develop the new housing at this intersection, and Bagley Housing
is also interested in creating new housing on this street.
